Ghaar Hiraa’ is situated at the peak of Mount Noor, also known as Mount Hiraa’, located north-east of Al-Masjid Al-Haraam. The Prophet (PBUH) used to frequently visit this cave worshipping Allaah in seclusion before his Prophethood; when one historic night, the leader of the angels – Jibreel (AS) came to him and commanded him to read, but the Prophet (PBUH) replied, “I am not a reader.” The Prophet (PBUH) described Jibreel taking hold of him and squeezing him until he could not bear it any more then releasing him. This happened again, and on the third time, he said to him: “Read! In the Name of your Lord Who has created. He has created man from a clot (a piece of thick coagulated blood). Read! And your Lord is the Most Generous. Who has taught by the pen. He has taught man that which he knew not.” [96: 1-5]

With this momentous incident, the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was commissioned with the message of Islaam at the age of forty.
