During the building of the Ka‘bah by Prophet Ibraheem (AS) he stood on a large stone in order to complete the upper parts of its walls. His footprints remained on this stone as a miracle from Allaah – this is known as Maqaam Ibraheem in which Allaah says, “Indeed, the first House [of worship] established for mankind was that at Makkah – blessed and a guidance for the worlds. In it are clear signs [such as] the standing place of Ibraheem” [3:96-97]

Nowadays, the Maqaam is enclosed in two protective casings made of glass and brass, mounted on a solid marble stone located 14.5m from the Black Stone. The marks of his toes and heels have since disappeared over time due to people repeatedly touching them [See Tafseer Ibn Katheer]. The greatest virtue of Maqaam Ibraheem is that Allaah instructed the Muslims to perform Salaah behind it, Allaah says, “And take, [O believers], from the standing place of Ibraheem a place of prayer.” [2:125] Hence, once tawaaf is completed, it is a Sunnah to pray two units of prayer behind it.

Did you know?

‘Abdullaah ibn ‘Amr said, “I heard the Messenger of Allaah (PBUH) saying that the Rukn and the Maqaam are two of the precious stones of Paradise, whose light has been extinguished by Allaah. If He had not extinguished their light, they would have illuminated everything between the east and the west.” [Ahmed]
