For the pilgrims it all begins in the town of Mina which is situated 7km east of Al-Masjid Al-Haraam. It is here where the pilgrims sleep overnight in tents on the 8th, 10th, 11th, 12th of Dhul-Hijjah. It is also here where the pilgrims stone the Jamaraat (stone pillars representing Shaytaan – Satan) on the 10th, 11th, 12th and some on the 13th of Dhul-Hijjah. This action is known as ramy. There are 3 Jamaraat located in Mina referred to as small, medium and large – the latter is also known as Jamaraat-ul-‘Aqabah.

The ramy commemorates the action of the Prophet Ibraheem (AS) who refused to listen to Shaytaan when he tried to lead him astray, so Allaah commanded him to throw stones at him in order to drive him away. This action represents the resolve to obey Allaah and to shun the Shaytaan in all situations.

Did you know?

Mina, is the town Prophet Ibraheem (AS) was meant to slaughter his son Ismaa‘eel, but through the mercy Allaah, a ram from Jannah was sent down to be sacrificed in place of Ismaa‘eel [see Surah As-Saaffaat (37):100-111].
