There are two hills near Al-Masjid Al-Haraam called As-Safaa and Al-Marwah. Allaah says, “Indeed, As-Safaa and Al-Marwah are among the symbols of Allaah. So whoever makes Hajj to the House or performs ‘Umrah – there is no blame upon him for walking between them…” [2:158]

As-Safaa is situated 130m south-east of the Ka‘bah while Al-Marwah is approximately 300m east of the Ka‘bah.

Prophet Ibraheem brought his wife Haajar and son Ismaa‘eel (peace be upon them all) to a place near the Ka‘bah – an uninhabited valley at the time. He gave them some dates and water and then left. Haajar suckled Ismaa‘eel and drank from the water until it finished, then they became thirsty. She travelled between As-Safaa and Al-Marwah seven times looking for signs of life. When she reached Al-Marwah (on the last time) she saw an angel at the place of Zamzam, digging the earth, causing water to gush out. Haajar quickly raced and tried her best to contain the water forming the well of Zamzam. At that moment the angel said, “Don’t be afraid of being neglected, for this is the location of the House of Allaah which will be built by this boy and his father, and Allaah never neglects His people.” [see Al-Bukhaari]
